Curriculum Vitae



Born in 1942 in Elliniko, Ioannina
From 1961 to 1966 he studied with a scholarship at the School of Fine Arts under teacher Yannis Pappas. He entered first and graduated top of his class.
In 1967, after his military service, with a two-year scholarship from the State Scholarship Foundation he studied the Art of Ancient Greece and the wider Mediterranean region, conducting a series of trips to Egypt, Asia Minor, Cyprus, Lower Italy, Sicily and several other European countries.
1970, appointed Assistant Professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts next to his teacher Yannis Pappas.
1974, together with 24 colleagues he co-founded the Centre for Fine Arts.
1981-1982, further trained at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Appliques et des Metiers d’Art in Paris on the latest sculpture materials and techniques.
1996-1997, taking a six-month educational leave, he visited the US to follow educational programs and organize sculpture workshops at the New York Schools of Art.
As part of the educational exchanges of the Erasmus Program, he regularly co-organizes Workshops at the Schools of Berlin, Brera and Bolognia.
For the past twenty years he has been responsible for setting up Sculpture Symposia in various cities of Greece and Cyprus, sculpting large-scale works in situ in public spaces.
He has had 45 solo exhibitions and taken part in numerous group ones, in Greece and abroad. Monumental sculptures of his are in public spaces, museums and private collections nationally and internationally. He has crafted busts and statues of many important personalities as well as many medals and coins. Large sculptural compositions of his are found in public and private spaces.
He taught for 39 years before retiring in 2009. He is currently an Emeritus Professor of Sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts. 2009, founded the Theodoros Papayannis Museum of Contemporary Art.
2010, awarded a tutorage at the Department of Plastic Arts of the University of Ioannina.
2015, honoured by the then President of the Republic, Mr. Karolos Papoulias, with the title of Senior Brigadier of the Order of the Phoenix.
2017, the 10th High School of Ioannina honoured him by taking his name.
2019, received the Athens Academy’s highest award, the Silver Medal in the Order of Letters and Fine Arts.
He has won many prizes in various competitions, the most recent being the international award for creating a sculpture at Chicago Airport (2011). His work has been repeatedly covered by the daily and periodical press as well as by the media in Greece and abroad He lives and works in Athens.
